Something smells fishy here...

I came across this eBay ad for an 1988 BMW M3 with a buy it now price of $22k, which is fantastic considering they normally go for $80k+. It was also featured on Bring a Trailer.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

However, it would appear the car is presently dissembled. The ad states that the owner just doesn’t have time to finish it assembly. Considering how much these go for, why wouldn’t someone just pay a shop the $5-10k to finish it, if you could get $50k more completed?

Something doesn’t add up here.

edit: I misspoke, they can sell for $80k+, although cheaper can also be found.

The seller is a shop.

The ad talks about how the owner retired and spends all his time in the tropics or something, and is written in a first person manner.

E30 M3s do not normally go for $80k+ at all. You’re looking at around $30k depending on mileage and condition.

I purchased this car several years ago with the intention of restoring it. I started working on it but since my customers cars came first it got pushed to the back burner. Some of you E30 nuts will probably remember it from 2011 in which German Cars for Sale wrote a blog about it...

It seems a little disingenuous to have the first few images be of a fully assembled car.

The seller *was* a shop.

I read it. He talks about how HE bought it, and its written as the car is his. I understand he owns a shop, which is all the more reason that I would have one of my employees finish it and sell it for the higher price.

I find that username really confusing. The ad says that he retired and sold his shop, but the username is “5151dempster.”

5151 Dempster St isn’t far from where the ad says the car is located, and it’s... a Budget Car Rental. Hmmm

The ad does say “Autowerks of Northbrook” which did become an ABRA Body & Glass recently. I guess that makes sense if he sold his shop. But that’s still about 10 miles away from 5151 Dempster. Weird.

e: I should clarify, I’m confident the ad is legit. I just think it’s a really weird username.

e2: The linked site does mention it for sale in 2011 (and name-drops Bill Caswell, nice), but I find this sentence odd too: “I don’t really recall what happened back in 2011 and why I still own the car but I do”

bizarre right? Its also includes the ominous “should fire right up" which is better known as "ran when parked"
